Our Mission
Learn Breakaway's Story
Around 7-8 years ago, I was an aspiring professional cyclist riding for a semi-pro team. I was training every day, sometimes twice a day, going on training camps abroad, and constantly pushing past my limits. However, I was only allowed to email my coach once a week, and my coach didn’t listen to or consider my feedback when designing my training plan. This led to severe burnout, to the point where I could barely get out of bed. I struggled with burnout for a couple of years, going from riding the bike for 4+ hours a day to being unable to ride for even an hour. I developed further health issues as a result of this experience, leaving me unable to train for almost eight years. I had no choice but to pivot my path and focus on something else.

I decided to study sports science to understand how to develop optimal training programs for endurance athletes, including runners, cyclists, and triathletes. I quickly realized that my old coach didn’t have an adequate understanding of endurance sports training and physiology. As a result, I started Breakaway, a company designed to offer people the chance to get fitter while balancing work and family life, and remaining injury and illness-free. At Breakaway, we help athletes discover their peak and explore the world through endurance sports by following our training plans.

Breakaway provides endurance athletes of all levels, from beginners to elite, with customized training plans and unlimited contact time—something many coaches don’t offer. If an athlete is struggling with training or needs help, they can email or message as much as needed. The Breakaway mission is to help one million athletes learn that they can get fitter and reach their goals without sacrificing everything from family time to their health and well-being. Breakaway is here to help you discover your peak.

You’re trying to stay consistent without burning out, but you’re not sure how, and you don’t want to spend a fortune to communicate with a coach. This is, in part, the model upon which Breakaway was founded. I was in a similar situation where I was only allowed limited communication with my coach and was burning out and struggling to complete even basic levels of training. That’s why, with Breakaway, you get unlimited communication (and more) with all our plans and packages.

Endurance sports can be analysed from three main perspectives: the athlete, the coach, and the researcher. I have experience in all three of these domains.

I began my journey in endurance sports as a cyclist, aspiring to become a professional rider. My training was demanding, and while it led me to national races and a semi-professional race team, it also burned me out.

As a result, I decided to study sports science at university, where I delved into the principles of endurance sports. After four years of education, I obtained my BSc in Sports and Exercise Science and a master’s degree in Sports and Health Sciences from the University of Exeter.

Eager to apply what I had learned as both an athlete and a student, I founded BCA. My goal in starting BCA was to ensure that athletes continually improve without burning out or sustaining injuries, as I did.

However, I wanted to further develop my knowledge and skill set, so I embarked on a Ph.D., researching recreational marathon runners. During my Ph.D., I have written articles for The Conversation, presented at workshops and conferences, and have done interviews for the BBC.

These combined experiences allow me to view your training through the eyes of an athlete, a coach, and a researcher. This comprehensive perspective enables me to thoroughly analyse your training needs and optimise your performance.
